NAMAZ
WUDHU
Wudhu, is the specific method of washing yourself before you pray. It was taught by our Holy Prophet Muhammad (saaw), after he came back from Me'raj.
Allah says in the Holy Qur'an, Sura Al-Ma-idah in verse 6:
"O you who believe! When you get ready for Salaat, wash your faces, wash your hands upto (and including) the elbows, and wipe (a part of) your heads, and (a part of ) your feet to the ankles." (5:6) |
Wudhu is not only needed for prayers, but also for:
- Certain acts during Hajj and Umra (pilgrimage to Mecca)
- Touching the writing of the Holy Qur'an
- Touching the names of Allah(swt)
- Touching the names of the Ma'sumeen(as)
It is recommended to be in wudhu as much of the time as possible. Here are a couple of specific examples where wudhu is recommended: before going to sleep, if you are angry then performing wudhu helps to calm yourself down.
As a muslim it is important to keep yourself clean at all times. Performing wudhu has a deeper spiritual meaning and is not performed for physical cleanliness. If a muslim wants to perform wudhu, but they are not clean, then they should wash first then perform the ablution. Before doing wudhu you should make sure that the parts of your body that are involved in wudhu (face, arms, head, feet) have nothing on them which would stop the water getting there. For example, plaster, nail varnish, rings, watch, socks. In addition ensure that your hair is dry.
Now we will explain how to perform wudhu, see the Quranic ayat above 5:6.
Some of the actions in wudhu are obligatory, this means that they have to be performed in order for the wudhu to be valid. Other actions of wudhu are recommended which means if they are not performed then the wudhu is still valid, but if they are performed then there are extra rewards inshaAllah.
We have made the distinction below between the obligatory and recommended acts, so you can choose to start by learning the obligatory acts only, and then if you wish introduce the recommended acts later. Or you may want to learn both the obligatory and recommended acts from the start.
|
RECOMMENDED Washing hands 2 times |
|
RECOMMENDED Gargling water in mouth 3 times |
|
RECOMMENDED Water into nostrils 3 times |
|
OBLIGATORY Splash water onto face and wipe in a downwards motion, covering the area from the hairline to the bottom of the chin. |
|
OBLIGATORY Drop water onto your right arm With your left hand wipe the water over your right arm, ensuring that the water reaches all areas between the elbow and the fingertips Always wipe in a downwards motion moving away from the elbow |
|
OBLIGATORY Drop water onto your left arm (now turn off the tap) With your right hand wipe the water over your left arm, ensuring that the water reaches all areas between the elbow and the fingertips Always wipe in a downwards motion moving away from the elbow |
From this point onwards you cannot use any fresh water from the tap. Masah (wiping) must be performed using existing water that has been involved in your wudhu. |
This is why, in the instruction above, it is important to turn off the tap before wiping the left arm. Otherwise, if your turn off the tap after wiping the left arm you run the risk off picking up fresh water. |
|
OBLIGATORY With your right hand, masah (wipe) the hair from the middle of the top of the head down to the hairline
|
|
OBLIGATORY With your right hand wipe your right foot in one motion between the toes and the ankle (either direction is acceptable). Make sure that your hand moves and your foot remains still. Again, you should not be using and fresh tap water, just the moisture that remains on your hand from previous wudhu actions. |
|
OBLIGATORY With your left hand wipe your left foot as described for the right foot. |
As mentioned previously wudhu is a spiritual process, and as such there are recommended duas to be recited at the various stages of wudhu. Please see below:
At the beginning of wudhu:
In the name of Allah, and for Allah; All praise is for Allah who made water Tahir and not Najis.
At the time of washing the hands:
O Allah! Place me amongst those who ask for forgiveness and those who are Tahir.
At the time of rinsing the mouth:
O Allah! Enable me to answer correctly on the day of meeting You and open my tongue for Your praise.
At the time of rinsing the nose:
O Allah! Do not keep me away from the fragrance of Jannat, and let me be one of those who will smell its fragrance, its refreshment and its perfume.
At the time washing the face:
O Allah! Brighten my face on the day when the faces will turn dark, and do not darken my face on the day when the faces are bright.
At the time of washing the right arm:
O Allah! Place my book of deeds in my right hand and a permanent stay in paradise on my left, and make my reckoning an easy one.
At the time of washing the left arm:
O Allah! Do not place my book of deeds in my left hand nor on my back and do not make it hang around my neck. And I seek refuge with You from the blazing fire.
At the time of Masah of the head:
O Allah! Cover me with Your mercy, Your blessings and Your pardon.
At the time of Masah of the feet:
O Allah! Keep me firm on the bridge (to paradise) on the day when the feet will slip, and help me in my efforts to do things which will please You, O Glorious and Mighty!

"O you who have faith! Obey Allah (swt), and obey the Apostle, and those charged with authority among you ... (4:59)"
The golden rule with regards to hadith is simple. If a hadith goes hand in hand with the Quran then we can accept it. If a hadith goes against the teachings in the Quran then we must dismiss it as false.
Hadith from our Holy Prophet (saaw) |
Hadith from Lady Fatema (as) |
Hadith from Imam Amir-ul-Mu'mineen Ali (as) |
Hadith from Imam Husayn (as) |
Hadith from Imam Baqir (as) |
Hadith from Imam Sadiq (as) |
The Holy Prophet (saaw) said: "Do not look at the minuteness of the sin, but see Whom you have sinned against." |
Imam Amir-ul-Mu'mineen Ali (as) said: "Having the Greatness of the Creator in your mind would make you realise the insignificance of the creatures in your view." |
The Holy Prophet (saaw) said: "Say each of your prayers as if it were your last prayer." |
Lady Fatema (as) said: "Following you (Prophet saaw) inequities (intrigues and revolts) took shape and varient voices were raised so that if you were present and supervising (things) all these differences and deviations would not have taken place. You set off (on the journey of eternity) from among us and now our condition is like the earth which becomes devoid of the beneficial rains. And your nation upset the order and discipline of matters. So be a witness and do not let their matter get out of your sight." |
Imam Amir-ul-Mu'mineen Ali (as) said: "Lowering one's eyes will serve well as a barrier against one's passions." |
Imam Sadiq (as) said: "Surely, a little action (of worshipping) with piety is better than many deeds with no virtue." |
Imam Sadiq (as) said: "Treat your ailments with charity and repel varieties of affliction by invocation." |
Lady Fatema (as) said: "Oh Allah (swt)! bestow upon my parents and all those persons who have rights of their blessings and beneficiences upon me, the best of Your rewards. Oh my Allah (swt), spare me the leisure and respite for the object for which You have created me. And do not let me be busy and involved (absolutely) in my commitments. And do not torment me when I ask forgiveness. And do not deprive me of what I yearn and question you for." |
Imam Baqir (as) said: "Our traditions (Ahlul-Bayt) survive in the hearts." |
Imam Husayn (as) said: "By my soul, there is no Imam but he issues judgement upon the Book, establishes justice, believes in the religion of Truth, and restrains his self alongside the way of Allah (swt)." |
Lady Fatema (as) said: "Oh Allah (swt)! content me with the sustenance you have granted me. And till such time that you keep me alive, hide me and make me sound and prosperous. And forgive me and take pity upon me when I die. (During death process). Oh Allah (swt)! do not help me in something that you have not predestined for me. And facilitate the achievement of that thing which you have predestined for me." |
The Holy Prophet (saaw) said: "Train your children in three things: the love of your Prophet, the love of his Progeny, ie Ahlul-Bayt, and recitation of the Quran." |
Imam Amir-ul-Mu'mineen Ali (as) said: "The tears do not dry up save for the hearts being hard, and hearts do not harden but because of the abundance of sins." |
Imam Sadiq (as) said: "Be careful of your knowledge and see from whom you get it." |
Lady Fatema (as) said: "Oh Allah (swt)! belittle me in my eyes and glorify and magnify Your station to me. And inspire me (about) Your obedience and the practice which may cause Your pleasure and the shunning and evading from things (matters) which are the cause of Your wrath, oh the most merciful of all." |
Imam Amir-ul-Mu'mineen Ali (as) said: "He who sells his next life for his present life in this world, loses both of them." |

Imam Amir-ul-Mu'mineen Ali (as) said: "The cause of the cessation of (one's) wealth is leaving the needy heedless." |
Lady Fatema (as) said: "And (Allah (swt) rendered) patience as a help for getting reward." |
The Holy Prophet (saaw) said: "A man's word telling his wife: 'I love you' never will quit her heart." |

Imam Sadiq (as) said: "The love of this fleeting world is the origin of all vices." |
